It’s a reference to a memetic Evangelion parody about Shinji’s unwillingness to pilot the Eva. (Even though one of the main points of Eva is that this is a reasonable reaction and that forcing kids to pilot war machines is actually super fucked)
Also, called it that Zander would be the horse. Again, he has no real combat abilities if you don’t count VR games. (Willa described him off-screen as “unteachable” when it came to weapons training)
Charlies face in the last panel seems to be one of having fun, like when someone on stage calls for audience participation, versus everyone else’s that seem genuinely Angry or annoyed. I like the contrast.
On the one hand, it is an example of rigid misandry, mobbing, matriarchy, discrimination, glass ceiling. On the other hand, Zander doesn’t care about the opinion of these commoners, he’s a prince and future king. And he has a much better chance of surviving a serious fight being a horse.
