The swords were the height point of iron craftsmanship on their island and it did take genuinely a lot of effort to get that good with such poor base materials.
It just doesn’t make them the best swords in the world. Nobody who seriously knows about this stuff will claim that.

To be fair, Japan is *very* iron-poor. Don’t know about Eto.
